A Simple Chic Garden Wedding
Nearly 10 years ago, Renee and Nick met at communications school for the Marine Corps and quickly became best friends. However, just as Nick was being deployed, their relationship began to grow into something more. “We had our first kiss just before he deployed, but weren’t completely sure about the next steps,” Renee recalls. While apart, the two spoke daily, relying on one another and ultimately, growing closer. Once Nick returned home from deployment, they officially became a couple.
According to Nick, he knew he wanted to marry Renee for years. Finally, after dating for 6 years, through deployments and being stationed in separate states, the time was right to pop the question. The proposal took place while hiking Renee’s favorite trail, a place she had previously mentioned that she’d like to marry him. “Even though it wasn’t feasible to have the wedding there, he wanted it to be part of our story.” The couple walked to a beautiful pergola, where Nick got down on one knee and asked Renee to spend the rest of her life with him.
Renee and Nick married on Sunday, October 15, 2017 in a simple chic garden wedding at The Hall and Gardens at Landmark. The evening ceremony took place within the venue’s gardens in front of 75 guests. “My favorite part of the wedding was seeing Nick as I turned the corner to walk down the aisle. He teared up some and looked so incredibly handsome.” As for Nick, his favorite moment was when Renee said, “I do,” and finally became his wife.
After the ceremony, the reception took place within the venue’s Marie Antoinette ballroom. Among the refreshments was an assortment of pizzas for the guests to enjoy and an open bar of champagne, wine and beer. The open bar was the one thing the couple tells us was worth the splurge. “Our guests really appreciated it.” The rest of the evening was spent celebrating the new Mr. and Mrs. Bernatowicz on the dance floor!
Tips from the Newlyweds
What did you wish you knew prior to planning your wedding?
We wish we knew how difficult it is to make time to spend with everyone the day of the wedding. Also, how fast the day flies by.
What surprised you about your wedding planning experience?
We were surprised by all of the little details that are so important and easy to overlook like.
What advice would you give to other brides who are planning their NC wedding?
To account for weather. Even in the middle of October, it was very warm. Our wedding was outdoors and still beautiful but our guests were very warm.
