You’re excited about your upcoming wedding and are happily checking away at your list — much to your relief! You feel good about all the planning decisions you’ve tackled. But all of a sudden your next decision makes you stop in your tracks: wedding band v. weddingDJ.

Ah, the debate continues.

Which do you choose?

Live Band

Tap your toes and sing along! A live band can infuse an extra level of energy into your wedding celebration. After all, who doesn’t love a live performance?

A band can anticipate and affect the mood of your guests throughout the night. They can boost the atmosphere, set a fun tone for the evening, and cause your guests to linger.  However, the opposite can also be true, so choosing your wedding band carefully is important.

When considering a band, it is important to also keep in mind that their going rate will be higher than that of a DJ. The band members will also need breaks, as well as enough venue space for all of their equipment.

DJ

Crank up the party with a playlist customized just for you. Light up the dance floor with some energetic pop, slow it down with some soulful ballads, and dance to timeless classics. A DJ is perfect when you want to play a continuous and wide range of music and genres for your guests.

A DJ will also serve as your announcer and emcee during your reception. They can even facilitate any special games or dances you choose to have. Any decorations or lights they use can also add an extra level of pizzazz to their entertainment, as well. However, it is important to note that some decorations can detract from the atmosphere you’re creating, so make sure to discuss this ahead of time.

Decisions, Decisions!

Now that you have the low-down on a wedding band v. wedding DJ,  it’s time to make a decision. Here are some Do’s, Don’ts, and questions to guide you as you figure out which options is best for you.

Do’s

  • Go see a live performance of any bands or DJs you’re considering. Seeing them in person allows you to get a feel for what kind of energy they bring to an event.
  • Ask your venue what their sound requirements, space allowances, and/or any limits on how many musicians they allow before you answer the wedding band v. DJ question.
  • Keep your guest’s music preferences in mind. Will one or two music styles make your guests happy, or will a wide selection of genres be more fitting?

Don’t

  • Don’t hire a band or DJ without drawing up a good contract. Get everything you discuss in writing, and don’t hesitate to get references beforehand.
  • Don’t put too much space between your musical entertainment and your guests. You do not want your guests to feel detached from the party.
  • Don’t choose your entertainment just by listening to a demo. There are too many factors to consider for achieving your desired vibe, to not do your homework.

Questions

  • Which option fits your budget the best?
  • What kind of atmosphere are you looking to create, and what kind of music do you like?
  • This is your special day, what is your personal preference?
